A quick Google search of the question “How to develop work ethic” will reveal hundreds of articles promising tips and tricks on building strong habits to get the job done.

But life often gets in the way, and as Laura Kaeppeler so aptly named the podcast she co-hosts, “Health Interrupted” is a chance to sit down with people to discuss setbacks that so often derail one’s best intentions.

So how did Laura become such an expert on how to optimize health and life?

Let’s take a trip back to her hometown of Kenosha, Wisconsin, way before she won the crown of Miss America 2012, and talk about her first job.

“Kenosha is such a wonderful place,” Laura Kaeppeler said in an interview on her website. “The people are my most favorite memory of growing up in Kenosha.”

Laura said her first job was at a local restaurant in Kenosha called “The Spot Drive-In”, and started when she was 15 years old.

“I worked there all the way through college and was able to pay my way through school.“

Early mornings, late nights and extreme weather helped Laura develop a strong work ethic that stayed with her throughout her life, and eventually helped her win the 2012 Miss America competition.

“I worked outside in Wisconsin which means it was cold and sometimes snowy. And they stayed open really late, so sometimes I work until like 3 or 3:30 a.m. And then I’d get up the next morning by 11 a.m. to work again. So the weather conditions, combined with the hours instilled a really strong work ethic in me.”

Laura says she’s grateful to the community that helped her during those formative years.

“And to give back to a community that really gave so much to me and help support me and shape who I am today means so much.”
